About this blog

Living and working in New York City has been an amazing experience. In our six years there we lived and breathed the city from within and made many close friendships with locals. Whether true New Yorkers or people who, like us, had come to the city from many other parts of the world.

On top of that our two beautiful daughters were born in New York and starting a family of your own makes you feel even more at home. Needless to say I have fallen in love head over heals with New York, its people, vibrancy, colors, beauty and ugliness too. In 2009 we returned to the Netherlands – for various reasons – and settled in Rotterdam, or ‘Manhattan on the Maas’ as we sometimes call it referring to Rotterdam’s innovative architecture.

Life in Europe could not be more different from life in the US and yet there are aspects in which the two meet. This blog is about my search for ‘the American’ in Europe and ‘the European’ in America.

    Marrika —
LOVE the blog! And happy to hear you are settled into your new home and working on something you are passionate about. We moved shortly after you left, though just 8 miles North. We are very happy in our new home, but like you, I will always treasure our Chelsea days. We miss Seal Park!
Hope to see you and the girls next time you are in NYC.
    Best,
    Trish, Lily and Ava
